Preview:
Written by Drs. Henry Cloud and John Townsend, Boundaries: When to Say Yes; How to Say No to Take Control of Your Life examines how conservative evangelical Christians should set and maintain proper boundaries, that is saying yes and no at the appropriate times, by examining how boundaries are presented in the Bible. Those who cannot say no live lives filled with unhappiness because people take advantage of them. The symptoms of unhappiness include feeling unappreciated, disrespected, stressed, and exhausted from doing too much at home and work…

Important to note that this book is mainly written and focused on American Evangelical Christians. If you are someone like this who has a real problem saying yes and no appropriately and sticking with that boundary decision, then this summary could really be helpful to you. Even parents to children at home can learn something from this book. Teach your children that a boundary is there to be kept and not broken. Using modern day as well as biblical stories the authors are able to convey most of the information needed. Instaread describes the "writing style as user friendly and easy to digest" with an "encouraging and optimistic" tone "designed to help people heal".

Having read Boundaries several years ago, I was looking for a refresher for a ministry training class I am taking at church. This fit the bill nicely! I like the approach to summarizing and explaining the key takeaways. I found myself wanting a little bit more - perhaps some short excerpts from the actual book - but can always refer to the full book if needed (when I am able to find it, that is!). All in all a very worthwhile read - just a few bucks and less than 30 minutes and I'm prepped for the class discussion!

This summary is a great condensed version of Dr's Cloud and Townsend full length book, Boundaries. Many times as Christians we think that saying no to someone is un-Christian or wrong. This is especially true for parents who sometimes give in too easily to their children's requests in order to give them more than what one had growing up.

This summary and analysis is divided into 10 key takeaways and also discusses the authors' style and perspective. I really enjoyed reading this book. I am a person who tends to say yes to everything. If someone asks me for a favor, I have a really hard time saying no even if I know it will cause me stress. This book helped me realize that it is ok to say no and even GOOD to say no in certain situations. Takeaway 9 states, "Step-by-step boundary setting lets the boundryless take control of their lives, and in the process, become happier and more fulfilled." This life is all about happiness, so if learning to say no helps reduce stress and anxiety then it is well worth it. I highly recommend this book, particularly to those who have trouble saying no. This book has great advice on how to change your ways.
