The first thing to note is that this isn't really a book. This is a look into the notes and stories of the characters we've met so far - with some redactions to keep from giving too much away. Although, The Fool's section had me grinding my teeth! I need to know more about this kid! I enjoyed seeing how the other cards prepared and survived Day Zero, stories that were 2 or 3 pages and gave a bit of background that helped me understand where they came from a little bit more. A good addition with some fun facts, but don't go in thinking this is a novella or short story.

The novella is just that—a compilation of short stories about the same event from different perspectives. It was fun to see from the points of view of the other arcana aside from Evie, but there were times when I struggled to read some of it (I didn’t particularly care about the new characters, but they were interesting enough). What I admire the most is probably her ability to invoke different voices in each of the stories, that is, every character was different in his or her own way. It’s not necessary to read this one prior to Arcana Rising, but the background it provides definitely comes in handy if one would like a more engaging reading experience.

It's not a full novel but it's definitely worth the read! Tells new characters stories of day zero including jack's! I loved it! Great companion guide for the series!
  • Not good - don't bother

This is disjointed and fractured. Don't waste your money - it is not a full length novel but rather just extra information. Ugh.
