Description

The Spiritual Journey of Grief

A Grief Observed is C.S. Lewis’s honest reflection on the fundamental issues of life, death, and faith in the midst of loss. Written after his wife’s tragic death as a way of surviving the “mad midnight moments,” A Grief Observed is an unflinchingly truthful account of how loss can lead even a stalwart believer to lose all sense of meaning in the universe, and how he can gradually regain his bearings.

This book has been immensely helpful. I am in the midst of my own bereavement. My husband of 54 years passed away a month and a half ago. C S Lewis has helped me recognize and understand the grieving process. And its cyclical nature. I got the audio book as well because it is sometimes easier to listen that to read. I recommend it to anyone who has lost a beloved spouse. It points out the light at the the end of the dark tunnel of grief.

Wow. Read this cover-to-cover in one sitting, and was incredibly moved and saddened. Really helped me work through some things in my own life.

I can't believe that a "sample" is the foreword. I don't care about the foreword- I care about what the author wrote! I'll go to a real book store & flip through to see if I want it. I'll make the purchase there.
  • Very Real & Very Strong

To this day nobody, in my opinion, has encapsulated the feeling of deep loss as well as Lewis does in this book. It is so deep and so stunningly honest. One line alone sums up the beauty and gravity of this book and the event it discusses: "Her absence is like the sky, spread over everything." Pure beauty on a page.
  • A thought spoken.....a voice heard.

It was if my thoughts and feelings were spoken out loud and they where heard by C. S. Lewis and he wrote them down. Waiting until my spirit was open enough to hear the truth of the pain, to read and surrender and accept the loss. Thank you, Jack. For my beloved, my brother John.
  • Profound and life affirming.

One of the most moving (and poetic) masterpieces ever written. This very small book (112 pages) had a profound effect on me, and I would submit that the same experience happens upon the reading of it by anyone else with a heart that still beats strongly in their chest. I can’t recommend this book highly enough. One of my all time favorites.

With the exception of the Bible, I have yet to be this glad to have read a book.

Opened up to me what the practice of love is and the depth to which it goes.
