Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The legendary Hollywood star of classic films and TV shows such as The Dick Van Dyke Show, Bye Bye Birdie, and Mary Poppins shares intimate stories from six decades of his renowned career.

“Earnest, funny, and appealing . . . captures the essence of an eventful life lived on and off the small screen.”—The Washington Post

With a foreword by Carl Reiner

Dick Van Dyke, indisputably one of the greats of the golden age of television, is admired and beloved by audiences the world over for his beaming smile, physical dexterity, impeccable comic timing, ridiculous stunts, and unforgettable screen roles.

His trailblazing television program, The Dick Van Dyke Show, was one of the most popular sitcoms of the 1960s and introduced another major television star, Mary Tyler Moore. But Dick Van Dyke was also an enormously engaging movie star whose films, including Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, have been discovered by a new generation of fans and are as cherished today as they were when they first appeared. Who doesn’t know the word supercalifragilisticexpialidocious?

My Lucky Life In and Out of Show Business is a colorful, loving, richly detailed look at the decades of a multilayered life, written by a performer who still thinks of himself as a “simple song-and-dance man,” but who is, in every sense of the word, a classic entertainer.

What a beautiful autobiography, written by a beautiful man! Thanks for sharing your life with us, Mr. Van Dyck. You write as eloquently as you dance and entertain us. May you continue to entertain all generations for many more years. My second review. Don't ask me to do it again, BookBub.

I've never been so gripped by a book, especially an autobiography. It was an intriguing read from start to finish offering intriguing insight into the life of a man I'd grown up watching on television. A class act onscreen & the same offscreen as well. I admire the moral stand he made in his career & can enjoy his performances all the more with this behind-the-scenes look into the life of one of my favorite actors.

Nicely done book about one of the most captivating personalities of family films and tv. The most fascinating part to me was the connection drawn between the world of actors we grew up knowing and loving and those from previous eras. He dealt with his marital infidelity in a very honest and straightforward way, although I guess I was hoping for a Disney type story of a lifetime together with his soulmate. Altogether, I went into the book with high expectations and was not disappointed.

When I first started reading this book I realized it wasn't going to be a biography based on "Hollywood dirt" and for that I thank Dick Van Dyck. The stories he tells about his life make you feel like you are reading about a good friend who has morals, is caring, loving, and so very funny. A good guy who deserves our respect for his many years of making us laugh. Dick Van Dyck is truly a class act.
