I really enjoy the works of Jules Verne. The richness of the language and he expands on what is possible. Is the center of the earth unreachable. He imagined going to the moon long before it was possible. What I genius.

A Baffling Book

Many of these Victorian classics have long poetic passages that grasp at scientific thoughts of their age and this one is no different. Axel’s narration of their journey is laced with all kinds of geological, biological, zoological, and anthropological terms and then…just when you think he might have a grasp of things, he says or thinks something utterly idiotic and it leaves you scratching your head.
I had a hard time with this book. The classics are fun if you aren’t educated in sciences and can just go with the story. But this one had some parts that I had to read out loud to my partner who commented on how learned men of the era got a pass.
So, I leave this book’s review with a Gentleman’s C for trying at least.
Long story

I did not expect this work of fiction to be so filled with the scientific arguments of its time. The characters are not believable, so it was a struggle to finish this book. The book has been used and exploited by Hollywood to make movies that don’t follow the book’s story.
Quite a Journey

What a wonderful read! There is science, humor, tension, foreboding. Axel’s narration is a delightful balance between the exquisite and the banal. I’m encouraged to read more Verne.
Journey to the end of the book that ended too soon.
