When I first read this book I didn't understand it at all. I had to read it for a school project and it just felt like a waste of time. He gets the fish but doesn't reap any reward. The sharks get it and he's back to square one in the end. Over the years since I have realized how silly that was. Hemingway is not stupid. The old man goes through the battle of his life and wins. And even though he doesn't get to sell the fish, it's the story that matters. I was looking forward to reread this and enjoyed it significantly more. This book is so short and so poetic. I loved the simplicity of the symbolism and the story. I look forward to rereading again later in life to deepen my understanding of the Old Man and what Hemingway is trying to say about life.

Moderate typos in this transcription that make reading a bit halting.

There are a lot of really weird typos in this book. It would seem to suggest the “owner” copy pasted this from a PDF or something.
