A REESE'S BOOK CLUB PICK

A #1 New York Times bestseller, Wall Street Journal Best Book of the Year, and soon to be a major motion picture, this unforgettable novel of love and strength in the face of war has enthralled a generation.

With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

  • History can and does repeat itself

This is my second time reading The Nightingale. Kristin Hannah has done a remarkable job researching and turning her work into to a creative novel of true life events. As I read this book, I felt like a character in the story with each word, page, chapter, to the books end. I felt as if I had been transformed into another person in another time living a different life. I lived the horrors and felt the loss as much as one can without physically being there. I was proud of each person who lived and died at the hands of people without humanity. The horrors and ugliness of that era should never be repeated. However, in this time of upheaval and disorder in the USA during the change in our government, has given many people great concern. Our new “leadership” behaves like an ineffective autocratic leader. This I base on his admitted lies to the people, a self proclaimed womanizer, racist, felon, with terrible personal financial management and more. He is showing many traits that were evident with Hitler. I hope that the true horrors written about in the novel, The Nightingale, are not repeated.

Hard to put this story down. Hannah did it again, another encapsulation of a family’s life, and their desire to make a positive difference, during one of our history’s most horrific tragedies. Amazingly well told and will be thinking about this story for a long time to come.
