Description

The basis for the Emmy-nominated "instantly gripping" (Washington Post) anthology series on USA starring Jessica Biel, The Sinner is an internationally bestselling psychological thriller surrounding an unexplained murdert

On a sunny summer afternoon by the lake, Cora Bender stabs a complete stranger to death. Why? What would cause this quiet, kind young mother to commit such a startling act of violence in front of her family and friends?

Cora quickly confesses and it seems like an open-and-shut case. But the police commissioner, haunted by these unaswered questions, refuses to close the file and begins his own maverick investigation. So begins the slow unraveling of Cora’s past, a harrowing descent into the depths of her own psyche and the violent secrets buried within. The Sinner is a dark, spell spellbinding novel, where the truth is to be questioned at every turn.

“As I read [the novel], I kept going, ‘I know where this is going—there’s no way this could be interesting.’ And then it would just take a completely different direction.” —Jessica Biel

The Sinner is unnerving and weird and guaranteed to stick with you weeks later.” —Sarah Weinman, editor of Troubled Daughters, Twisted Wives and Women Crime Writers

“Hauntingly insightful and sensitive.” —The Guardian

Not really the best read. Sometimes dragged and some parts were a little disturbing for my taste.

I just finished reading The Sinner for the second time. After watching the TV show, I felt compelled to lose myself in the detailed book version again. It is a complicated & eerily disturbing story... Made more difficult to follow by the frequent rough-translations and sometimes odd use of vocabulary, however, I found those oddities endearing by mid-way through... They seem to add to the mystery & fascination of the tale. Not an easy read but certainly worth it.
  • An absurd take on nothing that would come to be.

This is filth, it crosses moral boundaries beyond what can be exonerated, the author needs help, get them to a psychiatrist, never allow them to publish another book, boycott this, tweet about it, disgusting doesn’t even begin to describe where this goes.

I enjoyed the book and recommend it. My only complaint is about the translation. I found it difficult to follow at first. It got easier as I progressed. I have a working knowledge of German which helped. I enjoyed the twists and turns and the unexpected ending.
  • Confusing

Very confusing to read. The story is all over the place and therefore difficult to follow. I had to stop halfway through chapter 4. I'm surprised I made it that far...
  • Really clunky

I blame the translation; just made the conversations and thought processes sound so juvenile. Like everyone was in a truly bad high school play.
