Description

#1 New York Times bestselling author Fern Michaels gifts readers with a special holiday novel that encapsulates the best of the holiday season: a heartwarming homecoming, a bucolic setting, the remembrance of loved ones past and present, and the discovery of a future that, like the perfect gift, is as satisfying as it is surprising.

Joy Preston misses her beloved late grandmother dearly. But when she learns the terms of Nana’s will, she’s shocked—and more than a little irked. Joy moved to Colorado years ago and is now CEO of a successful nail polish company. Her life is in Denver. How can Nana have expected her to give that up, even temporarily, to take over a bed and breakfast in North Carolina for six months? Still, there’s no denying Heart and Soul’s charm, especially at holiday time . . .

The B&B is always elaborately decorated for the season, with themed guest rooms and dazzling lawn displays created for the annual Parade of Homes competition. The entire town takes part in the festivities, and soon, Joy is too, letting her reservations melt away. Yet there’s another reason for Heart and Soul’s popularity . . .

Rumor has it that, during the holidays, guests can be reunited with the spirit of a loved one who’s passed on. Joy is skeptical, yet she feels her Nana’s influence all around her—perhaps even indulging in a little matchmaking between Joy and a handsome estate attorney who just might inspire a magical new beginning . . .

This story is great for getting you in the Christmas spirit, but the story seemed a bit “too Hallmark-ish” and superficial emotionally.

Worst book I’ve read all year. The writing was terrible, characters paper thin, there was no plot.... The first line of the story is “I don’t care how long it takes, just get it done, Hayley, please. We don’t have a boatload of time!” Well that’s a bit of an oxymoron isn’t it? You don’t have a lot of time to get something done but you don’t care how long it takes? At another point shortly after, Joy (still in the office) goes to check on her employee because it’s “getting late.” She then proceeds to tell said employee that it was 3am. If that’s getting late what is actually late for a 9-5 job? So the writing was just bad... But I continued on. The story gave me a kind of Gilmore Girls meets Hallmark Movie vibe. Which, honestly, sounds amazing but fell way short of my expectations. There was absolutely no character growth, no obstacles to overcome, no challenges that serve as learning experiences for our protagonist. It’s literally a story about everything that happens perfectly and there’s NOTHING else. I figured she’d fall in love, have an inner conflict about whether or not she should give up her career to pursue a future with the man of her dreams, etc. Maybe a disagreement or a moment where you think it might now work out but you know that it will. Yeah... none of that happened. They went on three dates, got engaged, and that was the end. The conversations were forced. There was no depth to any character. It looks like Fern tried to build up the characters at the beginning but then decided that talking about food and Christmas decorations was more crucial to the story. Would not recommend.

Sweet, somewhat predictable but I enjoyed the characters and the twists and turns.
