Survival Stories is part of the Smithsonian Science Stories Literacy Series. Survival Stories features short stories that pair with the module, How Do Living Things Stay Safe and Grow? Both are aligned to grade 1 standards and have a focus on science and engineering. In Survival Stories, students will read about similarities and differences between young and adult living things and how the behaviors and structures of living things help them stay safe and grow.
Survival Stories includes the following features:
• Stories that focus on the growth and survival of plants and animals
• Stories that highlight STEM careers
• Incorporation of images from the Smithsonian Gardens and the Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute and objects from the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian
• On-grade and below-grade formats
