Description

In the summer of 2006, Emma Price watched helplessly as her six-year-old son's red coat was fished out of the River Ouse. It was the tragic story of the year - a little boy, Aiden, wandered away from school during a terrible flood, fell into the river, and drowned.

His body was never recovered.

Ten years later, Emma has finally rediscovered the joy in life. She's married, pregnant, and in control again...

... until Aiden returns.

Too traumatized to speak, he raises endless questions and answers none. Only his body tells the story of his decade-long disappearance. The historic broken bones and injuries cast a mere glimpse into the horrors Aiden has experienced. Aiden never drowned. Aiden was taken.

As Emma attempts to reconnect with her now teenage son, she must unmask the monster who took him away from her. But who, in their tiny village, could be capable of such a crime?

It's Aiden who has the answers, but he cannot tell her the unspeakable.

This dark and disturbing psychological novel is a page-turner you will not be able to put down.

I am utterly speechless shocked to bits. My heart aches for the protagonist her son Aiden and this entire family and the harrowing devastating trauma and suffering they’ve been subjected to particularly poor Aiden. I actually had to put this down and parallel read a RomCom book because it was so incredibly immense and painful to read. I cannot wait to read book #2. Highly recommend to those who aren’t triggered by highly abusive, traumatic experiences and violent behavior and physical abuse and child sexual abuse and neglect. I know I was definitely getting affected by certain situations and just put it down for a few days and redirected myself by immersing myself into a lighter comical themed book. Then I’d be able to delve back into this book. But if you’re unable to continue and it’s affecting you immensely just close it up and be done with it.

I was supposed to only read to chapter 19, because I just joined a book club for the first time and that was the assignment. Before I knew it, I was at chapter 30 and thought I might as well finish! Was hooked from the summary as soon as I read HE RETURNED. The story almost felt drawn out, but it started to come together perfectly. I laughed at Emma’s paranoia. Lol, everyone was the culprit. This could be a great movie! On my way to the sequel!

This is a masterpiece. Definitely, not your average thriller. The author must have a very vivid imagination. So many levels of drama.

The story was well written except for all the terrible language. None of the characters were likable, but it was a believable story.
