In 1863 Sterling Louchs, a student at the Pennsylvania Agricultural College is making his way home following the suspension of classes due to the Confederate offensive into southern Pennsylvania. Benjamin Taylor, a runaway slave escapes from his owner on learning that he is situated in the newly created free state of West Virginia.

Their journeys become linked and they experience a number of circumstances, together and separately. They reach Sterlings home, northeast of Gettysburg, as the decisive battle is occurring. Subsequently, Benjamin is assisted in making the transition away from his previous life to one that is free and productive.
