After a botched robbery at a Bank of America branch in North Hollywood, two robbers armed with fully automatic assault rifles and wearing full body armor fired more than 1,100 rounds as they battled police.

Eleven officers and two civilians were wounded. The two robbers, Emil Matasareanu and Larry Eugene Phillips Jr., were killed by gunfire.

Officer John Caprarelli was one of the first officers at the scene. Before a national TV audience, he confronted one of the robbers, provoking a gun battle and exchanging numerous shots before the gunman fell.

Officer Caprarelli was awarded the LAPD's highest honor, the Medal of Valor, as well as a National Top Cops Award. In this memoir, John gives the reader a rare glimpse into his private life along with vivid recollections of events during his 27 year career with the LAPD culminating with a detailed breakdown of his thoughts and actions during the infamous bank robbery.

    Having watched the shoot out on tv, and reading about it I had the pleasure of meeting John and Lynn in an office where Lynn worked. I mentioned the shoot out and I wasn't sure if he wanted to talk about it. I learned he penned a book. I bought it and read it. If you are interested in law enforcement Or the daily grind of police officers this will open your eyes. My dad was LAPD and I never hear any stories like this. A must read.

    I am an officer of 18 years. I started my career in 1994 and was on duty when the North Hollywood Shootout happened. I watched it on tv thinking how much I wanted to be a part of it, weird huh. In 1998 I was involved in my own shooting and shot. The dreams and waking up at night is something I have dealt with as well. This book is something anyone can read to understand the aftermath of police incidents. As much as we are expected to be heartless we aren't. This was an amazing story and I hope John and Lynn continue their voyage of assisting people to understand the trails a tribulations of officers.

    What a great book! Being a police officer, I enjoyed all the little story's in the book. All in all it was an amazing book, what a journey. Enjoy retirement and thank you for your service.
