There are two more books that belong specifically to this collection. The Author has yet to release them. It has been 7 YEARS. 01/2024
The world of ice and fire is huge…
*With a lot of food; I know, there’s actually rampant hunger, except for the rich & powerful. Nevertheless, we get these lengthy, detailed descriptions of banquets & feasts add-nauseam. For the most part, it’s all the same in Westeros with the addition of regional dishes here & there (fish stew).
*With an abundance of names; All the Lord, Ladies, & Knights! Eddard Stark, sometimes he’s called Lord Eddard & others Lord Stark. Easy enough to make it through the books, almost right off. With characters we are less familiar with, it seems to boggle at times. During one conversation with a few people speaking of one man, it’s almost confusing when they shift between first & last names. By the time they start with the nicknames or other monikers, I’m beginning to think they’re talking about half a dozen people.
*And don’t get me started on house sigils!! All that time spent naming animals, devices, colors, & several other attributes & information contained in a sigil… without connecting them to a name or house!!?? Sometimes you’ll be able to connect the dots to get a full name, title, house, location, fealty, motto or any combination there of. By the time you get the information figured out, you’ve forgotten why you wanted to know what Lord Easternont’s sigil is.
Wish I had more time to list the lists of things G.R.R.M. likes to, I don’t know, use as filler, maybe? Like I really need a list of all the edible creatures in the canals of Braavos!?
Hope I’ll be able to come back to add the positive with a few more annoying attributes (*1) of these fine novels.
*1 OMG. Why!? Book 4 was becoming too long, I get that. He wastes time & page space on lists. So the obvious solution is to start book five and continue down a chronological and coherent narrative where we as readers are not expected to interpret when the two timelines merge back into one another for book six. Simple, right? Not so much. Mr. Martin has chosen to hack book four into novels four & five but to be read as running congruently with each other.
Lunacy!
Most people don’t actually realize that at first causing some confusion, I’d guess. Something that may straighten itself out for those thus confused in book 6, IF we ever get to read it.
The running joke is long past way not funny!!
