Description

Leaders try to bring about change. And change almost always elicits opposition. So how do leaders navigate change, and the opposition to it, without giving up their dream for what could and should be? Carey Nieuwhof, pastor of Connexus Church near Toronto, examines five strategies that can help church leaders engineer change:

1. Determine who is for (or against) the change and why.
2. Decide where to focus your attention.
3. Develop the questions that will set your course.
4. Learn to attack problems instead of people.
5. Persevere until the critical breakthrough.

Insightful and practical, Leading Change Without Losing It offers hope and encouragement for leaders, no matter where they serve in the church.

  • An Encouraging read

This is such an encouraging read for a Youth Pastor. I greatly appreciate that Carey didnt just write about the perspective of a Sr. Pastor trying to lead through change in a church, but included aspects for ministerial staff and church volunteers as well. Anyone who has a vision for their ministry should get this book and take notes, which was something I noticed I loved halfway through the book, the extra wide margins for notes. What I loved about this book the most is that it isnt just filled with fluff. What I mean is that, sure, you can probably find similar ideas about leadership and changing the culture of an organization in a number of books, but this doesn't bore you to death with stuff that doesnt need to be in the book to convey its message. It's to the point with enough stories of experience and truth mixed in to make it an excellent, quick read.

Change is often very difficult. Even a good and healthy change can cause stress. Leaders, though, need to lead others through change. Nieuwhof's 15+ years of ministry at both small rural (but growing) churches and a newer church-plants have shown him a large amount of change. His five strategies are applicable to a church of any size that is looking to move forward. The concepts are simple, but extremely wise. Nieuwhof helps leaders to lead through change instead of letting the change become overwhelming and daunting. This book is highly recommended for all church leaders. You will not be disappointed! Change is one of those things that needs to happen within the church, and as a leader, you need to be prepared to lead others through it.
