Description

Rosaria, by the standards of many, was living a very good life. She had a tenured position at a large university in a field for which she cared deeply. She owned two homes with her partner, in which they provided hospitality to students and activists that were looking to make a difference in the world. There, her partner rehabilitated abandoned and abused dogs. In the community, Rosaria was involved in volunteer work. At the university, she was a respected advisor of students and her department's curriculum. And then, in her late 30s, Rosaria encountered something that turned her world upside down-the idea that Christianity, a religion that she had regarded as problematic and sometimes downright damaging, might be right about who God was, an idea that flew in the face of the people and causes that she most loved. What follows is a story of what she describes as a "train wreck" at the hand of the supernatural. These are her secret thoughts about those events, written as only a reflective English professor could.

Conversion put me in a complicated and comprehensive chaos. I sometimes wonder, when I hear other Christians pray for the salvation of the "lost," if they realize that this comprehensive chaos is the desired end of such prayers. Often, people asked me to describe the "lessons" that I learned from this experience. I can't. It was too traumatic. Sometimes in crisis, we don't really learn lessons. Sometimes the result is simpler and more profound: sometimes our character is simply transformed. -Rosaria Butterfield

Look me in the eye and tell me that our queer kids at church are not valuable. Tell me to my face, is this transgender woman who was lynched a product of the fall? Tell me, loudly and clearly.. do you believe our lesbian sisters are not already a part of the resurrection, the paradise, the Kingdom of God? The system we built for this world is broken. That is what original sin is. We have built systems on ableism, racism, religions that exclude other bodies, the lynching and enslavement of other bodies, the plunder of land with colonial and military violence, the subjugation of other genders and sexualities based on a system of male domination that devalues bodies that don’t fit our preexisting concepts. We are complicit in our practices that devalue other wildly beautiful humans. We are complicit in the violence against other soul-bearing humans whom the church has considered oriented toward sin. We are complicit in the forgetting of other histories that are not our own. Our genetic and psychic structures have avoided responsibility, deflected other people’s pain, and consume lies that have deemed all those other humans as “broken.” We have the tools of violence living inside us as active, vibrant blades whose edges we continue to sharpen. We use our experiences to subjugate and dominate others. We use our mental constructs and religious dogmas to our advantage. The broken system we’ve built is hurting the most vulnerable. The vulnerable are reproduced by a system that we have built to oppress—a colonizing machine that humans have created for the purpose of making others vulnerable to coercion, domination, and brutality. Free them all. No one is free until all are free. God. Embraces. All.

This book was life changing. Highly recommended for anyone looking for an unconventional conversion story that doesn’t involve fluffy christianese testimonies that plague our current Christian culture. Outstanding read! <3
  • Much more than a conversion story ...

Initially, I was looking for advice on how best to engage folks in the gay lifestyle and was curious how long and in what manner Rosaria came to Christ. But this book is so much more and is a must read for every Believer (and unbeliever) as it addresses other sin issues we all have and face, adoption, foster care and our walk with Christ or lack thereof. Bring a lot of Kleenex because this book will make you cry for a whole lot of reasons. Rosaria does not mince words and lays it out there in an unvarnished and vulnerable way. All that read this book will be equally appalled at our sins and encouraged by the grace and mercy offered through Christ. Just a wonderful story of God’s provision in a family’s life seeking Him daily in prayer and in His Word. Thank you most dearly!

As a Christian this gave me a new view on how I interact with people who have different lifestyles. It showed me how my speech can be offensive and also challenges me to be more compassionate.

Right of the gates let me say that I don’t agree wholly or blindly with all of Rosaria’s doctrinal stands, although I do agree with a large majority of them. Rosaria Champagne Butterfield has an incredible story of what God does! What he can do, of what he is doing, and what he will continue to do in the lives of the “And such were some of you.” ... she’s a reminder of what God can do in our lives! This book is a story of tender Love and amazing Grace, but one also of unapologetic Truth and necessary Firmness. She tackles contemporary issues that can not only apply to the non-believers but also the followers of Christ! Go grab a copy of it!
  • So, what can I say?

I absolutely devoured this book. I was seeking wisdom and a deepening of my response to a family member struggling with homosexuality. I heard in a refreshing way how being healed does not (or did not) demand the author to have relations with a man. Her healing and forgiveness was completed in the work of Christ's cross just as with any sin. Thank you!
