Description

THE RUNAWAY NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“Extraordinary . . . Reminds me of Donna Tartt’s 1992 debut, The Secret History . . . I was so thoroughly submerged in a rich fictional world, that for hours I barely came up for air.” Maureen Corrigan, Fresh Air, NPR

“This expertly paced thriller ...has the kineticism of a well-crafted miniseries.”
The New Yorker

Riveting from page one to the last breathless word. —Rebecca Makkai, New York Times bestselling author of I Have Some Questions For You

When a teenager vanishes from her Adirondack summer camp, two worlds collide

Early morning, August 1975: a camp counselor discovers an empty bunk. Its occupant, Barbara Van Laar, has gone missing. Barbara isn’t just any thirteen-year-old: she’s the daughter of the family that owns the summer camp and employs most of the region’s residents. And this isn’t the first time a Van Laar child has disappeared. Barbara’s older brother similarly vanished fourteen years ago, never to be found.

As a panicked search begins, a thrilling drama unfolds. Chasing down the layered secrets of the Van Laar family and the blue-collar community working in its shadow, Moore’s multi-threaded story invites readers into a rich and gripping dynasty of secrets and second chances. It is Liz Moore’s most ambitious and wide-reaching novel yet.

Good story, enjoyed it. I just felt like it took a little too long to get to climax and too many characters to follow.

I loved this novel. Couldn’t wait for my slices of time to open the page and dive into the mystery. So involved that I actually listed all the players on a sheet of paper. What a surprise. Thank you for bringing back memories of summer camp ⛺️

The detailed relationships of all the characters is brilliant! The back and forth of the timeline creates this dynamic intimate journey of each of their intertwined lives. Great Story!

Ok I was excited for this read because it the author Liz was on Fallon The book was interesting and eventful, I enjoyed the characters and their development, my problem is the ending is like so so cheezy it caught me offf guard, it was ok but straight up cheddar cheese. Maybe you will have a different opinion All in all a good read though Brian Eaze

The narrative jumps around so much between the multitude of characters and a variety of different decades, that it was very difficult to follow. A more linear narrative would’ve been good, especially because this is essentially a mystery. I found the ending to be absurd, and it felt tacked on as though the author realized they finally needed to finish the book and just threw it on at the last minute.

Too drawn out with too many characters and too many time periods.
