“I was riveted until the very last shocking sentence!”—Oprah Winfrey

“The most of-the-moment novel I’ve read all year, and it’s the book of the summer.”—Real Simple

“If you want an engaging novel sure to spark great discussion about that thorny [AI] future, this is it.”Ron Charles, The Washington Post

A suspenseful family drama about moral responsibility in the age of artificial intelligence.

When the Cassidy-Shaws’ autonomous minivan collides with an oncoming car, seventeen-year-old Charlie is in the driver’s seat, with his father, Noah, riding shotgun. In the back seat, tweens Alice and Izzy are on their phones, while their mother, Lorelei, a world leader in the field of artificial intelligence, is absorbed in her work. Yet each family member harbors a secret, implicating them all in the tragic accident.

During a weeklong recuperation on the Chesapeake Bay, the family confronts the excruciating moral dilemmas triggered by the crash. Noah tries to hold the family together as a seemingly routine police investigation jeopardizes Charlie’s future. Alice and Izzy turn strangely furtive. And Lorelei’s odd behavior tugs at Noah’s suspicions that there is a darker truth behind the incident—suspicions heightened by the sudden intrusion of Daniel Monet, a tech mogul whose mysterious history with Lorelei hints at betrayal. When Charlie falls for Monet’s teenaged daughter, the stakes are raised even higher in this propulsive family drama that is also a fascinating exploration of the moral responsibility and ethical consequences of AI.

Culpability explores a world newly shaped by chatbots, autonomous cars, drones, and other nonhuman forces in ways that are thrilling, challenging, and unimaginably provocative.

The mysteriously complex implications regarding AI are explored . But, the technical aspects of AI are secondary to the way AI technology has dramatically affected a family. This novel engaged my attention from the very beginning. If you’re interested in AI you will enjoy this novel.

Culpability is a gripping, emotionally resonant novel that masterfully explores the intersection of AI and the moral gray zones of guilt, justice, and redemption. From the outset, the story pulls you into a world where the consequences of a single decision ripple outward—affecting lives in unexpected and often heartbreaking ways. The author’s prose is both elegant and raw, striking a perfect balance between literary depth and page-turning suspense. What truly sets this novel apart is its nuanced portrayal of human vulnerability. The characters are achingly real—flawed, complex, and extremely relatable. You’ll find yourself grappling with their choices long after you’ve turned the final page. Without giving too much away, the plot centers around a tragic incident that forces each character to confront the burden of their own accountability. As the narrative unfolds through multiple perspectives, the novel challenges readers to question the nature of blame and whether true forgiveness is ever possible—either from others or from ourselves. This is not just a story about what happened. It’s a meditation on what it means to live with the consequences of our actions and reactions to what happened. Culpability is a powerful, thought-provoking read that will stay with you. Highly recommended for fans of psychological drama, ethical dilemmas, and stories that don’t offer easy answers—but do offer profound insight.
