Autumn in a small southeast, rural Kentucky town means two things: high school football and the start of deer hunting season. For seventeen year old Mark, the son of a semi-retired Major in the US Army; his normal day is much like the average teenager: school, friends and football. However, on this unique first day of deer season, his entire life changes. By making the decision to save a trespassing stranger, his entire life is thrown into upheaval. Mark's understanding of history and myth, fact and fiction and even magic is changed forever. Now, he must grapple with the responsibility of his action in this new reality that he finds himself in. When the past choices and personal dreams of this very special acquaintance threaten their very lives and all that he holds dear; Mark must rise to a role beyond that of a typical American teenager. Both he and this new friend must learn to communicate and trust in each other despite their differences, personal flaws and hidden secrets. They must learn together that growing up requires a person to grow in responsibility, in kindness, in understanding and even possible sacrifices in the face of extraordinary circumstances; should they really want to change the world.
After all, the final result of our lives largely depend on the choices that we make in the opportunities that we are given, not chance.
