The Palace of Pleasure was written around 1566 by English author and translator William Painter. Consisting of over 40 stories based on historical events, the volume was one of the primary models for Shakespeare's co-authored history play Edward III. The 46th tale, "Countess of Salisbury," is cited as the most relevant to the drama.
