Description

London 1816: Cavalry captain Gabriel Lacey returns to Regency London from the Napoleonic wars, burned out, fighting melancholia, his career ended. His interest is piqued when he learns of a missing girl, possibly kidnapped by a prominent member of Parliament. Lacey's search for the young woman leads to murder, corruption, and dealings with a leader of the underworld. At the same time, he struggles with his disorientation transitioning from a soldier's life to the civilian world, redefining his role with his former commanding officer, and making new friends--from the top of society to the street girls of Covent Garden.

This book is riveting! I’ve never read another like it. It was not something I would have chosen to read, but found I was sucked in to Captain Lacey’s world. Five stars for sure!

But the novel was compelling. The author sets the story in London in 1816, right after Wellington beat Napoleon at Waterloo. These were terrible times to live in dirty, polluted cities and London was the worst. Rigid class distinctions exacerbated the misery of all but the very wealthy. All this can make a fascinating thriller, and Ashley Gardner does just that. Lots of twists and turns later this story ends satisfactorily with most of its questions answered. This reader can’t wait to read more of the adventures of Captain Lacey.

Modern theme in a historical context. In some senses Capt. Lacey has a timeless chivalry about him as he solves a brutal abduction of a young woman. A sordid affair that Gardner weaves through the Victorian London streets! A great start to a good series!

Excellent story with a lot of truth in it. History tells us of caste system between those who have wealth and those that don’t. It’s still happening in many third world countries. Thank you for writing this grisly murder mystery. G

Beautifully written mystery! Historical mysteries are fantastic! Another time and place in history can be fascinating and what can be more fun than trying to solve a mystery! Captain Lacey is an interesting hero. Heroic and imperfect. Love him!
