Description

The perfect gift for Brooke Shields fans, There Was a Little Girl explores Brooke's relationship with her unforgettable mother, Teri, in this extraordinary, heartfelt memoir that became a New York Times bestseller.

Brooke Shields never had what anyone would consider an ordinary life. She was raised by her Newark-tough single mom, Teri, a woman who loved the world of show business and was often a media sensation all by herself. Brooke's iconic modeling career began by chance when she was only eleven months old, and Teri's skills as both Brooke's mother and her manager were formidable. But in private she was troubled and drank heavily.

As Brooke became an adult the pair made choices and sacrifices that would affect their relationship forever. And when Brooke’s own daughters were born she found that her experience as a mother was shaped in every way by the woman who raised her. But despite the many ups and downs, Brooke was by Teri’s side when she died in 2012, a loving daughter until the end.

Only Brooke knows the truth of the remarkable, difficult, complicated woman who was her mother. And now, in an honest, open memoir about her life growing up, Brooke will reveal stories and feelings that are relatable to anyone who has been a mother or daughter.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I too am an ACOA, and the similarities are shocking. Also very comforting. I cried at the end of the book out of sadness--for you and your Mom, for me and my Mom, for all ACOA's .... Thanks again for sharing.

Terri Shields was incredibly fortunate/lucky in her life..she hardly worked a day in her adult life and amassed a good fortune in real estate. She had a responsible and obedient daughter. While, it's a shame she was so inebriated during her life...most of us could only wish to have at least 1/2 of what she enjoyed and was privilidged to to experience during her life. I found the book to be a so-so read. Perhaps it would of been a better read if the authors account of her relationship with her mother was not as "sanitized".

Her story was told well. Although she was a child of an alcoholic mom, her moms love did her well. This book was an interesting read.

A beautiful story though heart wrenching at times. Honest. May Teri rest in peace!

Loved the book which made me laugh and cry. A gamut of emotion. The author achieved her goal, the defense of her mother in a respectful yet non embellished fashion. It is hard to see those especially our parents as they really are even harder to put a private struggle out for public consumption. Kudos to Brooke taking the emotional journey into the past and surviving.

Depressing subject matter does not need to become a depressing book. In the book, her mother was alcoholic, depressed and driven by insecurities. Surprisingly, towards the end, I did not have a vested interest (nor hope) in finishing the book AND thinking that my time was well spent. But, I finished it anyway. It was dreary, plodding and ultimately begging a lot of questions. Brooke spent too much time explaining, justifying and rationalizing and far too little time in connecting and discussing some of the important dots that she peppered throughout the book. I'm still a fan, but very disappointed in this book.

Brooke reveals a dimension of her life that will help others to understand the complicated times that are experienced with the loss of a mother. I am sure that her loss was intensified by their one on one relationship (being her only living child) and because her mother was also her agent. She also had the "what could have been" loss because of her mother's relentless alcoholism. The emotions she expresses will give others comfort and an understanding of how difficult it is to live with an alcoholic family member.

Really liked this book! It was very well written and very poignant.. I didn't know Brooke Shields could write so well and was so eloquent. A fascinating look at the complexities of mother-daughters relationship. I read it in one day..couldn't put it down. I highly recommend it.

I hadn't read her previous books so was surprised by the depressing nature of 99% of this one. As a child of an alcoholic parent, I sympathize with Brooke Shields. But I don't need to read about her mother's situation over and over and over. And over. She made this the platform of her story in this book but everything she shared seemed equally as dim. I admire Brooke for her perseverance but this but was just plain unpleasant all the way through.
