Yonge's comprehensive biography is based upon ten volumes of previously published correspondence, including letters from the Queen to her mother, brothers,and the Imperial Ambassador in Paris. There was some question as to whether the letters were all authentic, as even Yonge admits that the editor of the published letters had a heavy hand. Yonge addresses this controversy in his Preface.
