Don’t read the editors note

It was obvious in many ways that this was not a true diary, written by the girl in this situation. Beyond details of the story, the writing style itself was nothing a person journaling their own lives would write. I went into the story thinking it was an actual diary, and wasn't surprised at all by the end when it said "fiction".
