Now
When Libby Day was seven years old, her mother and two sisters were killed. She testified that her brother was the murderer. As an adult she has been living off of donations made to her by people who read about the murders, but the money is almost gone. She has to find a new source of income.

Chapter 2

January 2, 1985; 8:02 A.M.
Patty Day is worried about her fifteen-year-old son, Ben. She is having trouble communicating with him. She is upset when he dyes his hair black without asking her. She is also concerned because she is deep in debt.

Chapter 3

Now
Libby is invited by Lyle Wirth to make a personal appearance at his club, the Kill Club. She agrees to go because she needs the money. The Kill Club is made up of people who are obsessed with murder cases and want to solve them. The club challenges her insistence that Ben murdered her family.
The Kill Club is divided into several groups when it comes to the Day murders. Each has a different theory as to who really killed Libby’s family members,  Patty, Debby, and Michelle. One group within the club is following clues about the Angel of Debt, a serial killer they believe is hired to kill people who have bad debt and good life insurance so that their families will get the insurance money.
