Phenomenal novel by a phenomenal writer

I read this when it first came out but because I hadn’t caught up with Rebels it didn’t have much impact on me. Reading it now after having seen Rebels (I personally think it’s the best animated show Star Wars has done) I can hear the voices and understand the characters and JJM nailed it. The story was fantastic and has a terrifying villain, we see Sloan (and will again) and got to see the team up of Kanan and Hera who are the best characters from Rebels. I only wish we had gotten more Rebels novels (and more Star Wars novels by JJM).
Nowhere near as good as Rebels

Does not come close to the depth and maturity of storytelling in Rebels. This book serves one purpose. It gives you a peek into the meeting of Kanan and Hera. The rest of the story lacks heart and believability.
3 1/2 stars

I’d rate this book more a 3 1/2. As a rebels fan, I really enjoyed seeing kanan and Hera again. I also was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the other characters such as okadiah, skelly, and especially Zaluna! I found the story pretty interesting and was invested in the adventure.
I’d rate higher if the writing was a bit better. Sometimes the writing felt choppy or a bit awkward. I would’ve like to see more time with kanan and Hera interacting together. I still feel like I haven’t gotten to know them as much as I’d like too. Especially hera which is somewhat understandable bc kanan is more the main character but still it felt like hera didn’t have much of a personality. Still thought she was a total BA but I wanted to see more from her. I also felt somewhat bored when I’d read the chapters that surrounded sloane and Vivian. (Expect for the one chapter where my jaw literally hit the floor [I won’t spoil ;)])
Overall not a bad read and will probs read through again. Definitely could be improved in some areas but if you’re a rebels fan it’s worth it.

I’ve always wondered how The two leaders of the rebels crew came to know each other and this novel explains it in an action packed and exciting way

A New Dawn of Hope for Fans

I was among the many fans disappointed to find out that the Expanded Universe was ending, declared non-canon, and rebranded “Legends” by Lucasfilm/Disney. However, I was hopeful that it would truly mean what was being promised: a new, cohesive canon, where the films, shows, games, books, and comics all intertwine and reference one another.
And that promise came true. We now have a Clone Wars character in Rogue One, Thrawn in Rebels and his own upcoming novel, Rae Sloane in multiple novels and the comics… It’s a better time than ever to be a Star Wars fan, and it all starts here, with A New Dawn, the first canon novel.
The novel itself is a great read. John Jackson Miller, who I already loved for his KotOR comics and Knight Errant, does these characters justice in a way that’s especially impressive considering Rebels hadn’t yet begun when he wrote this book. It has adventure, heart, and sets up characters who have become incredibly important and beloved.

This book does a magnificent job of describing the meeting of Kanan and Hera. It's filled with Drama, comedy, and awesome twists. I recommend this book to anyone who likes Star Wars: Rebels.
New Dawn

I am not a fan of the book "A New Dawn." In fact, I essentially forced myself to read this book out of respect for Star Wars information. Two-thirds of the book are incredibly boring with little action. In fact, anyone wanting just the action can skip to the last 7 chapters and be fine for understanding the information.
