Description

ABSTRACT The MIS area has been subject to swings in supply and demand, both in terms of faculty and students. Existing research has suggested that a shortage of MIS faculty members could negatively impact the quality of teaching, research, and service in the MIS area. This paper evaluates the current state of the profession utilizing factors drawn from past research efforts. Surveys of IS faculty members at AACSB institutions indicate salary compression and budget concerns do cause difficulties, although doctoral or private institutions appear to have fewer problems than do masters level or public institutions. Respondents felt they had greater service and teaching commitments, and less time available for research. These effects were magnified at masters level institutions. But, respondents also agreed that both MIS research productivity, quality of instruction, and overall faculty quality had improved over the past five years.
