Description

1. TEXT In Van Dijk's account of a 'text grammar', he holds that the concept of text could be regarded as 'continuous discourse', which has two structures: a deep or macro-structure 'as a whole' and a surface or micro-structure. The transition from macro-structure to micro-structure is carried out by a set of transformation rules. (Van Dijk, 1972) According to Van Dijk's point of view, the notion of text is the basic linguistic unit, which is manifested at the surface as discourse and may be compared to a super-sentence. The general distinction of text from sentence consists in the fact that the former is generally much larger than the latter in length.
